Dermoid Ovarian Cyst Statistics: What The Numbers Say

There are different types of ovarian cysts in the world today. Although most women have a limited knowledge so far as cysts on ovaries are concerned, statistics show that the majority of women usually develop cysts in their ovaries at least at a given time in their child-bearing age.

It is just that most of them never really become aware of their presence. This is so because a woman usually starts to experience the symptoms of ovarian cysts only when they have become large and thus started interfering with the normal functioning of the female reproductive system.

Dermoid ovarian cysts are a type of cysts on ovaries which grow in the ovaries. Statics show that they are fairly common given that they constitute almost 1/3(a third) of all benign ovarian tumors. According to studies carried out over the years, dermoid cysts are rarely cancerous. They are usually benign especially in young women.

Cases where these cysts become malignant are very rare. It is estimated that the instances where they turn out to be cancerous constitute less than 2 percent of all reported cases. This is very rare.

This does not however mean that they cannot be cancerous. This is so especially in women who are past menopause. Studies show that cysts which occur in women who are past a child-bearing age are more likely to be cancerous than the ones which occur in younger women. If you thus develop dermoid ovarian cysts and you are well over 40 years of age, you should go for a medical check-up so that the doctor can make sure that it is not cancerous.

Dermoid ovarian cysts can occur in either one or both ovaries. Studies show that women who develop these types of cysts on ovaries usually account for almost 10 percent of the cases. This means that in cases where severe complications develop and thus causing the need for the removal of the ovaries, about 10 percent of the women will risk suffering permanent infertility.

Congratulations! By increasing your dermoid ovarian cyst knowledge, you are a step closer to taking total control of your reproductive health.
