The signs and symptoms of ovarian cysts vary from person
to person. One person’s experiences may not be the same as the next person’s. This
may be due to genetics, environmental factors, differences in physiology,
lifestyle differences, or differences in the type and size of cystic growths. The
following are ovarian cyst symptoms that are common in women who have reached a
childbearing age.
1.Dull
aching
This is the most common early symptom of ovarian cysts.
The pain is usually felt at the lower abdomen part of a woman’s body. While the
ache is usually dull in most cases, it is not uncommon for some to experience
sharp pains around the pelvic region. The pelvic pain that results from having
cystic growths in the ovary can be continuous or intermittent.
2.Bloating
of the abdomen
This is where a woman feels as if her abdomen is full or
some kind of pressure is being applied in the abdominal area. It usually
results when a cyst has grown in size such that it applies pressure on
surrounding organs. This can sometimes manifest as a swelling around the abdominal
region.
3.Painful
menstrual periods
Experiencing pain before, during and after having your
periods is not usually normal. It can sometimes be a symptom of ovarian cysts.
This is so especially if the pain seems to start out of the blue, that is if
you had never before had painful menses.
4.Nausea
This is a common sign or pregnancy. It is however
sometimes just but a sign of cysts on ovaries. It is thus one of the reasons
why people usually get confused when it comes to ovarian cysts and pregnancy.
5.Vomiting
While some women usually only feel like vomiting, some
actually vomit. This is also another reason why people mistake the presence of
cysts for a pregnancy.
6.Fatigue
The ovaries play a major role when it comes to the female
body. Having cysts on ovaries may sometimes affect its function, especially so
far as hormonal production is concerned. The hormonal imbalance that results
may be a cause of fatigue. Sometimes, fatigue may be simply due to the pelvic
pain that the growths cause.
7.Irregular
periods
Despite the presence of ovarian cysts, some women
continue to have a normal menstrual cycle. Some women however usually have
irregular periods. This is usually as a result of the hormonal imbalance that
cystic growths usually cause as a result of the effect that they usually have
on the functionality of a woman’s ovaries.
8.Bleeding
or spotting between periods
Bleeding or spotting between periods sometimes occurs because
of a cyst burst. This is mainly because of the discharge that occurs as a
result of the contents of a ruptured cyst being released into the female
reproductive system. This discharge is usually abnormal, as far as its color
and timing is concerned.
Since cystic ruptures are not common, this symptom of
ovarian cysts is not that common.
9.Change
in urination frequency
Large cysts sometimes happen. This is usually as a result
of the lifestyle that a woman leads or simply because of a woman’s hormonal
make-up. Not treating growths as soon as they appear could also sometimes give
it time to increase in size.
Large cysts usually apply pressure on organs that are
adjacent to the female reproductive system. This includes the kidneys. Pressure
on a woman’s kidneys usually affects their ability to hold urine. They therefore
hold urine at half their normal capacity and thus the increase in the urge to
empty the bladder.
10.Difficulty
in bowel movements
This happens as a result of having large cysts in a woman’s
ovaries. They apply pressure on the bowels and thus interfering with the ease
of movement. It can thus sometimes make bowel movement painful.
11.Pain
during sex
Not all bedroom problems have to do with “being in the
mood”. Your hormones are sometimes also not to blame. The presence of growths
around the pelvic region may be the cause of the pain that you feel every time
you try to have sex.
12.Difficulty
in trying to get pregnant
There are many ways through which ovarian cysts affect
the ability of a woman to get pregnant. Cystic growths can sometimes block the
fallopian tube and thus blocking the path of sperms, something that can make
conception difficult. A cyst burst can lead to ovarian damage that can
significantly reduce the chances of a woman getting pregnant. Finding it hard
to conceive is thus one of the symptoms of ovarian cysts.
13.Infertility
Infertility may sometimes be as a result of having
growths in the ovaries. It may thus be a pointer to the presence of cysts on
ovaries.
14.Sudden
Increase In rate of hair growth
15.Increase
in body and facial hair
16.Unexplained
headaches
17.Breast
tenderness
18.Rib
pains
19.Strange
Nodules
Some women usually feel like they have bruises under the
skin at the onset of cystic growths.
20.Sudden
weight gain
While most weight gain problems are usually to blame on
diet and lifestyle, sudden increases in the body-weight of a woman is usually a
sign of an underlying problem. It is sometimes simply a symptom of ovarian
cysts and not an indication having a faulty weight loss routine.
