Ovarian Cysts And Ectopic Pregnancy: What You Should Know

Probability of an ectopic pregnancy

Given that only one pregnancy in fifty is usually an ectopic pregnancy, the chances of a woman having such a complication can be said to be slim. This does not however mean that you cannot develop this complication. This is because any woman is at risk of having an ectopic pregnancy and given the variety of factors that may lead to this complication, it is important to know the following:

An ovarian cyst can cause an ectopic pregnancy

Studies show that is possible for a tubal pregnancy to occur as a result of ovarian cysts. Here is what you should know about cysts on ovaries and this type of pregnancy complication.

While it is possible for one to have cysts on ovaries without any complications arising, there are times when cysts affect the normal functioning of a woman's reproductive system.

Normal functioning of the female reproductive system

During ovulation, the ovary usually releases an egg which then travels through the fallopian tube for implantation on the endometrial lining of the uterus. This is what is supposed to happen under normal circumstances.

Cysts on ovaries may obstruct movement of the egg along the fallopian tube

However, the development of ovarian cysts may obstruct the movement of the egg. This may cause the egg to be fertilized inside the fallopian tube. Without any possibility of moving from the fallopian tube due to the obstruction, the fertilized egg may start to develop inside the fallopian tube and thus resulting into an ectopic pregnancy.

The rupturing of an endometroid cyst

While cysts may physically obstruct the egg from moving through the fallopian tube, this obstruction may also be caused by an ovarian cyst rupture. This is so especially in cases where an endometriod cyst ruptures and thus leading to its contents being spilled into the fallopian tubes and the uterus. This spillage may result in the formation of scar tissues along the fallopian tubes and other parts of a woman's reproductive system. This scarring may obstruct the movement of the egg along the fallopian tube and thus resulting in an ectopic pregnancy.

Infections can also cause scarring that may lead to this complication

Infections that result from the spilling of the fluid from cysts on ovaries after an ovarian cyst rupture may also cause infections which may also affect the movement of the egg and thus leading to this complication of pregnancy.
